Your Farmers

"Why do farmers farm, given their economic adversities on top of the many frustrations and difficulties normal to farming?  And always the answer is: 'Love.  They must do it for love.'  Farmers farm for the love of farming."
- Wendell Berry

I'm a disciple of Jesus and a husband to Michelle. I'm a family member and friend to many. I'm also a farmer and faith community builder, and I'm responsible for tending this beautiful gift of land in Havre de Grace MD, to which native Piscataway people once and still do belong.

Living in community amongst God’s creation and sharing this life with others gives me joy. I hope that my time here on earth, as a disciple of the Third Way, will create a ripple effect of people who spend their lives bringing healing, restoration, and justice to the land, community, and people of this world.

My grandma once told me, “whatever you become in life, even if it’s a trash man, you be the best dang trash man there is." So, thank you, grandma, for the guidance and instilling in me the mentality to shape this Earth better than I found it.

My main goal is to incorporate myself more and more in the workings and relationships of my immediate community, and about 5 years ago I found Third Way. Working here I've come to love morning livestock chores because you work as a two-person team but some days, when everything possible seems to be going wrong, just give me a well-grown, weed-free patch of greens to harvest!

I have a tattoo on my arm in Hebrew which translates to "Here I Am" which is the response that several biblical characters give after God calls to them. I put this on my body to remind me to answer the call of God - in the loudness of life and in the quiet of my heart.

"This life therefore is not righteousness, but growth in righteousness, not health, but healing, not being but becoming, not rest but exercise. We are not yet what we shall be, but we are growing toward it, the process is not yet finished, but it is going on, this is not the end, but it is the road. All does not yet gleam in glory, but all is being [glorified].” - Martin Luther

I love to laugh! If I'm laughing, you can be sure that my cup is full, that I am full of peace and joy. Laughter is how I connect with others. It makes me feel alive.

I dream that one day I'll live in a pink house on land that has a bunch of bees and wildflowers and dogs running around. And I can just have a cute little roadside stand where I sell honey and flowers and produce what I grow. And I'll wear a big straw hat. People will buy what I have sustainably produced because they'll know me and want to support their neighbor and community.

I want to make the world open for my kids. I hope to leave a legacy of strong women who fight for the life and love of others. I aim to love and nurture the kids I made and the kids I am gifted. I want to show my children the possibilities of making the world better so they can find the one that aligns best with their passions and they can create space for themselves and others.

We are farming on land that was once inhabited by the indigenous peoples of the Piscataway and Susquehannock tribes.  We recognize that this land was unjustly taken from them without their permission.  We hope our lives upon and care for this land will honor their legacy and wisdom in living harmoniously with this place.
